Almost no one records it, it is never played in concert halls (at least not in the states), and for some diabolical reason Alfven is still best known for his first Swedish Rhapsody (fine piece though it is). The Symphony No. 4, "From the Outermost Skerries," is a lavish depiction of the Swedish seacoast, rich in plaintive melodies and evocative orchestration. Alfvén creates a series of tableaux that suggest the turbulent ocean and the haunted shoreline in a highly Romantic manner, comparable in some ways to the watery and windswept tone-painting of Vaughan Williams ' A Sea Symphony.

Although Alfvén rather disingenuously told the press that his new symphony was "about" the love of parent for child, and dedicated the premier to his adolescent daughter, Margita, the wordless soprano/tenor vocalise that twines in and out and round about the lush, at times even throbbing, orchestral sonorities made it perfectly clear to most listeners and critics, during the first performance Alfvén hade under nästan hela sitt liv ekonomiska svårigheter på grund av sin oförmåga att hushålla med pengar. Together, they weld Alfvén's vitally organic four-movements-in-one symphony into an organic whole which traces the course of a love affair from desire to fulfillment to tragedy and despair.
